From June 20 to June 22, 2017, Our Secure Future and the Nobel Women’s Initiative convened 20 Women, Peace and Security thought-leaders from around the world to examine the current and future state of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and community. The convening, Designing Our Secure Future, was a response to the overwhelming feedback from WPS stakeholders that there is an urgent need to develop a clear vision that will provide all actors with a shared road map and a unified message. During the two-and-a half day convening, participants worked together on strategic planning exercises to create multiple future scenarios of the WPS agenda – from utopia to dystopia. They then identified the steps that need to be taken today in order to avoid the worst case scenario, and move toward a preferred future. During the convening, participants used methods drawn from futurists, scenario planners, and storytellers. They anchored in the forces that have shaped the current environment and imagined together what the future might hold. As a result of in-depth examinations, strategic thinking, and storytelling, the group identified three areas of action: developing multiple narratives for the WPS agenda; actively creating a new culture for a WPS Community of Practice; and identifying funding pathways for the future of WPS work.
