Women’s Literacy a Critical First Step to Having Women in Leadership

It was more than fifty years ago that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared September 8th International Literacy Day, but today women continue to make up two-thirds of the nearly 800 million people who are still not literate in their own languages. Women’s literacy is not only critical to greater gender equality and more successful communities, it is a cornerstone of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, as women’s education creates more pathways for women to take on roles as global leaders. Our Secure Future stands with UNESCO on this important initiative.
