As February 20th marks World Day of Social Justice, we are proud to look back at the accomplishments of the Women, Peace and Security agenda towards a world free of discrimination. When the landmark United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 was passed in October of 2000, it reaffirmed the “important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflict, peace negotiations, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction.”
Since then, we have seen that women’s inclusion and the use of a gender perspective is eliminating barriers around the world. Women are more likely to reach across political, economic, and cultural divides. When women are at the table, they help us get closer to obtaining the goal of World Day of Social Justice, to “remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.”
