On May 25, 2023, Captain Cecilia Erzuah, a Ghanaian peacekeeper, received the 2022 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for promoting the principles of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. As the Commander of the Ghana Engagement Platoon, Captain Erzuah, has directed her platoon to conduct patrols and outreach to local leaders and women’s and youth groups. Captain Erzuah has also hosted discussions addressing topics, such as domestic violence, gender equality and childcare, which resulted in an increased number of women enlisting in Community Protection Committees—a previously male-dominated space. Captain Erzuah is the first Ghanaian peacekeeper, and the first recipient from a contingent or unit, to receive this award.
